A profuse sweep of blooming red-orange desert globemallow, discovered at the entrance to the Pima Canyon Trail in Tucson, Arizona. Decorative in orange, green and black.

The desert globemallow (sphaeralcea ambigua) is a very xeric member of the mallow family, and is native to the hot, low southwestern US deserts, extending into Mexico. A large, shrubby, sometimes sprawling perennial, its flowers are usually bright red-orange, as in this photo, but some wild forms are pale lavender-pink. One of these turned up by chance in my patio garden last year, bloomed and grew gloriously - but then was drowned by the extraordinary record-breaking amount of rain we have had in Tucson, Arizona this 2021 summer monsoon season: more in 6 weeks than we usually get in a year.

I was born into a city of sharp light, tall ever-shifting shadows, hard edges, constant motion, a multitude of reflecting surfaces and night-time glitter: New York, N.Y. A childhood fascination with mica sparkling in the cement sidewalks, sunlight flashing off tiny multi-colored cars streaming down the Westside Highway, sunset colors reflecting in the ruffled water of the Hudson River, neon signs coming on at night against the black New Jersey shore -- all evolved into a life-long love of luminosity and the sculptural qualities of light and darkness.
